So I have never read the book "Interview with a Vampire". I have heard of the book and the not so unknown movie to follow. Though I personally have never seen nor read it. So sitting down on the near flooded day to listen to the novel I was excited to give it a shot. The occult has always been fascinating to me- I have done extensive research into it just being a fascinating topic all around.
First thing I would like to say about this book and to those who take the time to read this. If you are in an abusive relationship or encounter someone as cruel and vengeful as Lestat is in this book- run. Just turn around from wherever you are and head the other way because NO ONE needs that in anyone's life. This book was extraordinarily well written for all of its characters in my opinion because it really does push the loneliness factor that immortality could hold while also establishing how far away from humanity one can go once we give that up.
So before reading this book, I spoke to a couple of friends about it and they mentioned how they like Lestat and Louise together. That they were just two unhappy individuals who shared being lonely and wanted a daughter. Where I think some of that statement is true- good lord anyone who thinks these two should be in any facet of a relationship together should witness some healthy relationships. It is like the many times I see people get into a relationship that is more predatory than loving. It always starts with one of the parties preying on an emotionally vulnerable partner. Latching onto them like leach at the arm. Draining what little life they have. -And after both parties realize they are still unhappy and lonely even with being each other, they typically bring a child into it not unlike in this book with Claudia. It is really like one grievous mistake after another. Then when Louise can't understand Claudia's cruelty all while still loving her and trying to escape Lestat by killing him. It's a gosh darn mess of "you should not be in abusive relationships because this is what happens."
Overall I enjoyed the book. I like the relationship that Armond and Louise ended up having while also enjoying the dark take on a child vampire and how exceptionally cruel Claudia was. Really take into account the whole nurture vs. nature and considering both Louise and Lestat were her fathers seeing the influence that had over her. Lestat is an abusive partner, to put it in nice words. What he did to Claudia in the end and in turn Louise was just one more attempt to control him.
